Dana Schutz is a true storyteller. His art builds a world populated by tumultuous characters, human madness, disastrous situations, and physical tragedies. She paints a dystopian portrait of the contemporary world, freeing herself from traditional conventions of beauty. With a virtuoso mastery of colors, over the years she has gradually developed a keen sense of dramatic tension which shines through in her complex compositions. His paintings depict imaginary scenes, drawing their inspiration from hypothetical situations and improbable bodies, all intertwined in the life and language of our time.

The exhibition reveals the omnipresent themes in his work: abstract subjects often treated with a touch of humor, the artist in action in his studio, metamorphosis and the construction of identity, as well as the tensions between the individual and the group.

In recent years, Schutz has integrated sculpture into his practice, extending his gestures and forms into the material. Like a cycle, the subject of the sculpture finds its roots in his first paintings. Recently, his paintings reflect volume more and gain in allegory. They are populated by groups of colorful characters, seeming to float in the darkness, perched on an island made of jawbones, or struggling to reach the top of a mountain.

These visions of a post-apocalyptic world reflect his view of the history of art, from Brueghel to Alice Neel. They evoke the decadence of a sick society, the futility of contemporary mythologies, and the difficulties of communication between beings. Borrowed from a painting of the same name, the title of the exhibition, "The Visible World both proposes and contradicts — offering to see both chaos and imagination.

The exhibition "Dana Schutz is organized by the Musée d'Modern Art in Paris in collaboration with the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk (Denmark).
