Expo Notre-Dame de Paris, from builders to restorers

Integrated into the permanent tour of the City of Architecture and Heritage, the exhibition "Notre-Dame de Paris, from the builders to the restorers" presents itself as an exceptional opportunity to revisit the cathedral and its history, from its first foundations to the current construction site.

On April 15, 2019, a devastating fire struck the building. Following this tragedy, a vast restoration project was born, financed by the generosity of 340,000 donors from 150 countries, all mobilized from the night of the disaster. A dedicated public establishment, operational since December 1, 2019, supervises the site.

The restoration plan, unveiled in July 2020 before the National Heritage and Architecture Commission, obtained unanimous approval by opting for fidelity to the damaged structure and the use of authentic materials. Notre-Dame Cathedral will thus regain, in 2024, its former splendor, open to the faithful and visitors from around the world.

In the heart of Paris and in multiple workshops across France, an extraordinary human adventure is currently taking place. Companions, craftsmen, architects, engineers and researchers are all engaged in this enterprise aimed at bringing the building back to life. These men and women are part of the long line of builders who have marked the history of this world heritage of humanity.

This exhibition, the result of a collaboration between the public establishment in charge of the conservation and restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, project manager of the site, and the City of architecture and heritage, establishes a privileged link with the building currently out of reach of the public. It offers an overview of the skills of the companions and craftsmen who are working to make the cathedral accessible to worship and visitors by 2024. In addition, it constitutes a unique opportunity to highlight the constants and developments of the techniques deployed as part of heritage projects.
