Representations from cavities across the globe are revealed. They are entering the most eminent museums of modern and contemporary art, largely thanks to the surveys. These pictorial works are masterpieces in their own right!
Conceived during expeditions led by ethnologists and prehistorians, they bear witness to the state of a wall and a representation at a precise moment. Artistic creations from caves that are sometimes difficult to access are now presented to you through the exhibition. Around fifty surveys - some reaching up to 15 meters long - of paintings, drawings, archives and photographs take you in the footsteps of the documentalists... and the documentalists, many women actively participating, particularly within the expeditions of the ethnologist Leo Frobenius.
YOUR JOURNEY
The epic begins with a global vision of rock art on a global scale. Enter the caverns, following in the footsteps of those who explored them, discover emblematic surveys and relive the aesthetic impact of the beginning of the last century.
To enter the method for carrying out the readings, go to the next phase. From the Sahara to southern Africa, follow the missions of Frobenius, Breuil, or even Lhote and Bailloud, through a rich collection of works and personal objects, from the collections of the Frobenius Institute and the Musée de l' Man.
On their return from shipment, the surveys quickly become the subject of publications and exhibitions. Two exhibitions - one at the Musée d'ethnographie du Trocadéro (1933) and the other at the MoMA in New York (1937) - mark a turning point in their career. Relive these historical moments and contemplate the avant-garde works that dialogue with the surveys.
The last stage began in the 1940s. From this time on, the public's relationship with rock art evolved: it became more accessible, while the surveys moved away from our gaze.
