The treasure of Notre-Dame, entirely reconstituted after the Revolution, is recognized worldwide for its precious relics, notably the Crown of Thorns and the Wood of the Cross, from the original treasure of the Sainte-Chapelle. Under the reign of Napoleon I, these relics found refuge in new reliquaries within Notre-Dame. In addition, the treasure is renowned for housing magnificent masterpieces of French goldsmithing, made in the 19th century, some of which were designed by the famous Eugène Viollet-le-Duc during the Second Empire. These exceptional creations bear witness to the grandiose history of Notre-Dame and France. However, this exhibition goes further by attempting to go back in time and retrace the history of the treasure before the Revolution. Through inventories, historical accounts, paintings, illuminated manuscripts, engravings and other visual documents, as well as several preserved works, visitors will have the chance to delve into the thousand-year-old history of the Notre-Dame treasure, since the Merovingian era. This exploration will reveal a wealth comparable to that of the most dazzling objects created for Notre-Dame in the 19th century. This prestigious exhibition is curated by renowned experts from the Louvre Museum. Jannic Durand, honorary director of the Objects of Art department, and curators Anne Dion-Tenenbaum, Michèle Bimbenet-Privat and Florian Meunier, of the Objects of Art department, worked together to offer a captivating experience to visitors, blending history , art and culture at the heart of one of the jewels of French heritage.

Where is the work on Notre Dame de Paris at the start of the 2023 school year?

Restoration work at Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral reaches crucial stages as the reopening date approaches. The historic building is expected to welcome visitors again in 2024, marking a symbol of resilience after the devastating fire that ravaged it in 2019.The public establishment responsible for the restoration project recently provided an update on the progress of the work. Major progress has been made, confirming the commitments announced by the Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul-Malak, regarding the reopening of the monument in two years. Here is the current state of the restoration work on the cathedral:

  • The stone vault of the north transept, which had been extensively damaged by the fire, was completely rebuilt.

  • The mason-cutters are preparing to begin the reconstruction of the arches and oculus of the cross vault of the transept, which had been completely destroyed.

  • The stone sculptors began their work in the large sculpture hall installed in front of the facade of the cathedral.

  • The work is completed or nearing completion in the chapels of Saint Germain, Sainte Madeleine, Saint Marcel and Saint Jean l’Evangéliste/Sainte Agnès.

  • The cleaning and restoration of the interior walls of the cathedral, which cover an area of 42,000 square meters, is well underway.

Regarding the reconstruction of the emblematic spire, its construction should be completed by 2023. The first phase of the construction of the 600-ton scaffolding necessary for this work has just been successfully completed. The president of the public establishment responsible for the conservation and restoration of the cathedral, Jean-Louis Georgelin, expresses his confidence in the imminent reopening of Notre-Dame. Efforts to rebuild the collapsed vault represent a major step, while the interior of the cathedral is gradually regaining all its splendor.A report from the Court of Auditors published last October was also optimistic about reopening in 2024. According to the report, conditions seem favorable for achieving the set deadlines. The progress of the restoration work on the cathedral will play a key role in development projects in the surrounding area. The City of Paris has already announced the name of the architect in charge of the project, as well as revealed visuals of the future squares and surrounding areas, highlighting the importance of bringing this emblematic place back to life in the heart of the capital.
